Among La Paz attractions is its gorgeous Cathedral, as well as enchanted islands created from once-molten volcanic rock, and great diving places where you can swim among sharks and whales. Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral
The little mission founded here in 1720 was abandoned in 1735 due to attacks from the region's inhabitants. The present Cathedral was built in 1871 with a beautiful altar dedicated to the La Paz Virgin. This is an important part of La Paz sightseeing.
Beaches
The beach is one of the main attractions in La Paz with its blue waters and colorful fish. Here you can lie on the sand, relax, and admire the impressive Sea of Cortez. The most visited beaches are Coromuel, Cimancito, el Tesoro, and Pichilingue.
The best beach in the zone is the renowned Tecolote Beach, located on the bay's tip, after Pichilingue. It features water sports and restaurant service due to its large size and popularity. It lies just in front of impressive Espiritu Santo Island. Another one is Balandra Beach, where you find a very peculiar, mushroom-shaped stone, the classic icon of La Paz. This beach is part of the eight bays that make up Puerto Balandra's salt lagoon. Here you find spectacular marine flora and fauna, making it an ideal place for snorkeling and kayaking.
Diving
La Paz, Mexico is internationally renowned for its first-class diving.You find beautiful natural and artificial reefs. You can admire the beauty of the marine fauna, from dolphins to humpback whales to whale sharks. You can also see colorful tropical fish, from elegant angelfish to fierce barracudas.
The most important places are the Suwanee reef, perfect for beginning divers; Los Islotes, a magical place formed by two beautiful, gigantic rock formations, home to many sea lions; and the artificial reefs, including a ferry sunk in 1976, home to hundreds of fish species.
Espíritu Santo
Catalogued as the most impressive island in the Sea of Cortez, it has a red limestone floor and is surrounded by beautiful waters. It has Candelero Bay, an incredible beach with a mountain chain that splits the bay, runs to the sea, and finishes in rocky formations that make part of another small island. It is home to wild fig trees, a spring, and a relaxing waterfall. North of Espiritu Santo is Partida Island, named for the belief that they were once a single island. Between these are two sand banks, excellent for camping.
La Paz Herpetarium
This is a place built ecologically, recreating the natural habitat of the different reptiles. Come and learn about these cold-blooded animals. You will find serpents, crocodiles, iguanas, and lizards.
The Malecon
The Malecon is a 3-mile-long pedestrian sea walk where you will find hotels, romantic bars, nightclubs, and little stands selling handicrafts. Walk along the beautiful sea walk, built in the 20's but recently remodeled, and enjoy a majestic view of the sunset on the bay. Here you find the best nightlife centers, lodging places, highest-quality restaurants, and specialized stores for sport fishing and, undoubtedly, diving. You can admire the bronze sculptures that embellish this unparalleled place. Gray Whale Community Museum

Lagoon Biosphere Reservation
This is a unique geographic spot, located at the Tropic of Cancer. Here you will find species of the region that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. In a sierra that reaches 7200 feet above sea level, this place has a Darwinist feeling with its endemic birds and plants. An unusual characteristic is the fact that its weather as well as its vegetation changes with the altitude, from a completely dry climate to abundant rains at the highest peaks.
Todos Santos
If you want a break from the hustle and bustle of Cabo San Lucas, then Todos Santos is the perfect place to head. The Sierra de La Laguna Mountains, the Pacific Ocean, and the Baja desert all meet here. Founded in 1724, this charming town is considered a small jewel near the Pacific where fishing and agriculture remain the primary way of life. The rich farmlands yield products for local markets and for Cabo which are enjoyed by many in all the great restaurants Todos Santos has to offer.
Be sure to check out the amazing variety of original art in local galleries, terrific places to shop for special souvenirs because Todos Santos is home of painters, sculptors, artisans, and intellectuals. Loreto
Loreto is Baja's oldest city and the site of the first of the California missions, dating to 1697. A lengthy restoration of the Loreto mission and the quaint downtown was recently completed, making it one of the best-preserved examples in existence.
Loreto offers visitors unspoiled beaches and the warm waters of the Sea of Cortes. It fronts many wonderful islands: the Coronados with sea lion colonies; Carmen, with beautiful beaches and coves; Danzantes, a paradise for scuba diving; and Catalina, an ecological favorite for its unique flora and fauna. These island groups include abundant marine life and a protected National Maritime Park. It is the capital of the Escalera Nautica (sea ladder), the center of a series of harbors along the Sea of Cortez that will soon have new facilities for the yachting and marine sportsman looking for some of the best waters in the world. |
